celia l. cussen teaches at the Universidad de Chile. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. Her research focuses on issues of race and religion in colonial Lima; she is currently completing a study of the beatification case of Fray Martín de Porres.

rebecca earle teaches in the History Department of the University of Warwick, in England. Her research focuses on the cultural and political history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spanish America; in recent years she has published works examining the links between clothing and identity in the colonial world, the role of print in the wars of independence, and nineteenth-century commemorations of the independence movement. This article forms part of a larger project that charts the (partial and halting) incorporation of the preconquest past into elite nationalisms during the nineteenth century.
