This comprehensive two-volume bibliography, ten years in the making, deals with Black slavery in the Western Hemisphere since the end of the Civil War in the United States. Coverage includes books, articles, dissertations, and selected unpublished manuscripts. There are 15,667 citations, extensive cross-references, a subject index, and an author index.

Latin Americanists will be concerned only with volume one, which includes chapters on the African background, the Atlantic slave trade, slavery in the Caribbean (1,178 citations), and slavery in Central and South America (893 citations). There is no annotation.
