With this volume, Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxochitl's most famous and influential history, known in Spanish as the Historia de la nación chichimeca, is presented in English for the first time. The editors and translators have brought to their task vast experience and collective knowledge of Alva Ixtlilxochitl, his complete body of works, and the literary and cultural contexts in which he wrote. Previously, under the title The Native Conquistador: Alva Ixtlilxochitl's Account of the Conquest of New Spain, three of these editors published a translation of the “Décimatercia relación” (Thirteenth account), which is part of an earlier history authored by him. Students of Mexico without a reading knowledge of Spanish thus now have at their disposal two fundamental pieces of Alva Ixtlilxochitl's historical corpus.
