Robert A. Schneider is professor of history at Indiana University and editor of the American Historical Review. He is author, most recently, of The Ceremonial City: Toulouse Observed, 1737-1780(Princeton, NJ, 1995) and editor, with Robert M. Schwartz, of Tocqueville and Beyond: Essays on the Old Regime in Honor of David D. Bien (Newark,DE, 2003). He is completing a study of writers and intellectuals in the age of Richelieu. Whitney Walton is professor of history at Purdue University. She is author, most recently, of Eve's Proud Descendents: Four Women Writers and Republican Politics in Nineteenth-Century France (Stanford, CA, 2000) and is working on a history of study abroad between France and the United States in the twentieth century.
