Dr. Miguel León-Portilla was the dean of Nahuatl studies. He passed away following a rich and full life on 1 October, 2019. With his passing the field of Nahuatl and Mexica studies has lost its star. Throughout his career he served as an advisor, formally and informally, to an entire generation of scholars both in Mexico and abroad. Throughout his career he received a host of awards and recognition. Among these are the Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor by the Senate of Mexico, membership in the Colegio Nacional and in the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua, and the Academia Mexicana de la Historia. He was recognized as a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress in 2013.
