María Carla Sánchez is an assistant professor in the Department of English and the Program on Women's Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has published essays on Fanny Fern, Catharine Sedgwick, María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, and Willa Cather, and is co-editor (with Linda Schlossberg) of Passing: Identity and Interpretation in Sexuality, Race, and Religion (NYU Press, 2001). She is currently completing a book project titled The Right Kind: Social Reform and Fiction in the Antebellum United States.
