leora auslander is currently Director of the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Chicago, where she also teaches European history. Recent publications include Taste and Power: Furnishing Modern France (University of California Press, 1996), “The Gendering of Consumer Practices in Nineteenth-Century France” in The Sex of Things: Gender and Consumption in Historical Perspective (University of California Press, 1996), and, as coeditor with Michelle Zancarini-Fournel, Différence des sexes et protection sociale (XIXe—XXe siècles) (Presses universitaires de Vincennes, 1995). She is currently working on a comparative study on the everyday life of citizenship in France and Germany.
