Maria Torok is a practicing analyst in Paris. Her work with the late Nicolas Abraham represents a renewal of psychoanalytic technique and theory along Freudian lines. She is coauthor with Abraham of The Wolf Man's Magic Word (Minneapolis: U of Minnesota P, 1986) and the forthcoming “The Shell and the Kernel” (Chicago: U of Chicago P).

NICHOLAS Rand, Associate Professor of French at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is author of Le cryptage et la vie des oeuvres: Du secret dans les textes (Paris: Aubier-Flammarion, 1989). He is writing a book with Torok on Freud and the quandaries of psychoanalytic theory.
