lorraine daston is Director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. She is the author, with Katherine Park, of Wonders and the Order of Nature (Zone Books, 1998). She has also published many articles on the history of science. She is currently at work on a history of the ideals and practices of scientific objectivity.
