Summary

Relatively little is known about the relation of type and size of community to the marital characteristics of the population of non-Western countries. In an effort to throw further light on this subject, this paper examines the relation of selected marital characteristics to a rural-urban continuum for Taiwan. The continuum was constructed on the basis of both the population sizes and the administrative types of communities, and the main findings of this study are contrasted with these variations in the United States. The results indicate that the continuum has high predictive or discriminative power for certain marital characteristics.
