In 1968, Lester Little (one of the great undergraduate teachers of the last century) and Jerome Taylor (an expert on the important twelfth-century intellectual Hugh of Saint-Victor) published an English translation of a selection of the essays by Marie-Dominique Chenu that had first appeared in 1957 from J. Vrin in Paris as La théologie au douzième siècle (itself a collection of somewhat earlier articles). Thus, one of the most important works of medieval intellectual, religious, and social history written in the last one hundred years appeared already in midcentury, translated from the French, although the equally great work of social and religious history by Herbert Grundmann, Religiöse Bewegungen im Mittelalter: Untersuchungen über die geschichtlichen Zusammenhänge zwischen der Ketzerei, den Bettelorden und der religiösen Frauenbewegung im 12. und 13.
