This chapter, the first of two to revolve around gender and genre, builds on the work produced on socialism and women in women’s studies and Eastern European studies and on television studies’ rich legacy of engaging with issues of gender to unearth the gendered story of socialist and postsocialist TV. Where nationalism, state socialism, and the Cold War paradigm worked together to construct the appearance of seamless, homogeneous socialist populations, a feminist look at television reveals a variety of different, often conflicting, affiliations. This chapter considers socialist TV’s gendered address in terms of scheduling and content, and in terms of women’s participation as TV professionals and viewers.
