Archival Sources and Periodicals
Readers interested in learning more about the publications listed here should consult African-American Newspapers and Periodicals: A National Bibliography, ed. James P. Danky (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1998). This two-volume bibliography, arranged alphabetically by title, accounts for over six thousand newspapers and periodicals by or about African Americans in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Entries list the frequency of publication, subscription rates, publisher, and variations in title and place or frequency of publication. The bibliography also informs researchers where issues of the publications can be found, either on microfilm or hard copy. Readers should also note that increasingly, access to nineteenth-century African American newspapers and periodicals is available through web-accessible archives.
