AN EXERCISE IN COMPREHENSIVE SELECTION
While compiling this bibliography, we have often thought of the plight of the central character in Arnold van Gennep’s “The Research Topic: Or, Folklore without End,” which tells the story of a young scholar who began researching a single branch of folk tradition, the Evil Eye, at the age of eighteen and became so immersed in his work that he was still accumulating data at age fifty-four, by which time he had learned hundreds of languages, compiled 27,000 bibliography items, and written 12,000,000 notes. Unfortunately for the scholar, he died at his carrel in the Bibliothèque Nationale while updating his bibliography—without having published a single item.
Though our own efforts have been at once less ambitious and less traumatizing than those of van Gennep’s scholar, we have been forced to wrestle with many of the same problems: the magnitude of the published record; the linguistic and cultural diversity of folk medical tradition bearers; the wide range of ethnographic, artistic, and scientific perspectives that have been brought to bear on this subject; and the constant publication of new studies that make any bibliography out of date as soon as it goes to press.
We have attempted to resolve these difficulties in two ways: first, by limiting our citations primarily to works in English; and second, by choosing from those works a representative cross section of books, chapters, and articles by folklorists, anthropologists, health care specialists, linguists, and other scholars from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The result, we believe, is a selective but thorough reference work that documents not only the scholarship on the regional traditions discussed by the contributors to this book but also the extensive body of research devoted to other forms of folk medical belief and practice.
The selected bibliography which follows is, then, an attempt to supplement the works cited in the individual essays. As such, it has been limited to sources not cited elsewhere in the volume. Thus, the volume Popular Beliefs and Superstitions of The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore—though obviously pertinent to bibliographic sections lH and 3C—appears under neither heading because Kirkland, Croom, and Baldwin all cite it in their respective essays.
To facilitate access to these materials, we have organized this bibliography by topic. Section 1 identifies books and articles according to the traditional belief or practice named in the title and examined in the text. Section 2 does the same for practices more often considered a part of popular culture rather than folk or traditional culture. Sections 3–5 identify materials according to the geographic region in which they are found and tend to be studies that examine a broad range of traditional practices—medical and other. Sections 7–9 index general studies in medical folklore, medical anthropology, and medical sociology.
Because entries are not cross-referenced within the bibliography, readers should examine all pertinent categories. For example, someone seeking additional information on Native American shamans should look first in section 1 (Traditional Medical Beliefs and Practices), subsection B (Magic, Witchcraft, Shamanism, and Charms). The next step would be to examine section 4 (Ethnomedical Traditions in the United States), subsection A (Native American). Finally, the reader might turn to section 3 (American Folk Medicine: Regional Variation), under the appropriate geographical heading. Entries in sections 7–9 can be consulted for general background and additional context from disciplinary perspectives.
