Emigration that is associated with political violence can be a form of dismemberment, in which nations are broken apart, families are separated, histories are repressed, and populations are divided by immigration status. These processes are particularly profound in the case of those who immigrate as children and therefore may be citizens of a country that they do not remember and residents of a country in which they lack citizenship. Practices that seek to restore both membership and memory can be defined as re/membering. By examining the immigration histories of 1.5-generation youth who left El Salvador during the 1980–1992 civil war and were raised in the United States, this ethnography details how re/membering gives rise to particular temporalities, geographies, and forms of belonging.
