Chapter 5 moves into the Ural Mountains and begins with an exploration of the rich traditions of wooden architecture in the Perm region. Crossing the Urals into Asia leads to the rugged Yekaterinburg territory. The chapter concludes with wooden architecture in the southern Urals in the Chelyabinsk region. Several of the urban wooden houses show elements of the Russian counterpart to art nouveau. The challenge of preservation of wooden structures is especially acute in urban areas.
