Chapter 3 opens the book’s geographical sweep, beginning with the Kola Peninsula in the far northwest of Russia and proceeding around the White Sea to the Mezen River in the north of Arkhangelsk Province. This region, known as the Russian North, contains the greatest examples of wooden architecture, both secular and sacred. The high point is Kizhi Island, now an outdoor museum with its original two churches and many reassembled houses and churches from the region. Equally important are the villages of Varzuga and Kimzha, which are living examples of traditional life in a modern era.
