The postscript offers the author’s reflections and analysis of the 2022 fiftieth anniversary commemorations of Uganda’s Asian expulsion held in the UK, North America, Uganda, India, and virtually. These commemorations occurred in the aftermath of Brexit and in the wake of anti-immigration rhetoric in the UK, the US-based police killing of George Floyd in 2020, the rise of anti-Asian violence since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fallout from Brexit. It examines the difficulty of organizing a commemoration in Museveni’s Uganda in the context of ongoing political turmoil and militarism and political uncertainty surrounding the future of people of South Asian heritage in the nation. It highlights the efforts of Asian and Afro-Asian women of Ugandan heritage to preserve their connections to Africa and their displacement through commemoration practices, writing, and engaging in kinship, community, and memory-work—creating possibilities for racial reconciliation, healing, pluralism, and interracialism beyond nation-state boundaries.
