Chapter 2 covers the period from 1957, when Ghana declared independence, to the mid-1990s, before the escalation of the conflict between the Pentecostal/Charismatic churches and the Ga community. It explains how the ban on drumming transformed from a relatively overlooked custom into a national issue. The chapter analyzes the public discourse on urban noise pollution and its impact on the changing public attitudes toward the ban on drumming, as revealed in the articles published in the most prominent state-owned newspaper, the Daily Graphic. The Ga community instrumentalized the growing public concern about urban noise pollution and its effects on health and well-being by framing the ban on drumming as a custom that was beneficial for the public.
