American musician Maurice Rocco found great privilege when he arrived in Bangkok in 1964. There, he earned more money and respect than he had in the United States. But his arrival also marked a strange and intimate juxtaposition of aesthetic and identity systems. Moreover, the United States was asserting neocolonial pressures on Thailand. Rocco’s success was part of a complex process. Studying both Rocco’s life and Thailand’s transformations from the 1950s through the 1970s requires a particular kind of situated historical ethics, one that is aware of the limits of research as well as the position of the researcher. The Introduction begins to describe the nightlife scenes where Rocco had his second act, which will be the focus of the book. This chapter also establishes the framework of intimacy that will be used throughout the book.
