The introduction presents the multiple ice geographies in scale and in space that the book takes up. It introduces the political stakes and intellectual interventions of understanding the Arctic, Antarctica, and specifically Alaska as racialized geographies and imaginaries, and how Indigenous creative and theoretical knowledge productions intervene in those colonial interpretations. The introduction provides explanations for the book’s key concept of emptiness and careful guessing as a methodology and how the two reinforce each other.
