The introduction presents the key components of the book as a project that constructs a genealogy of the romance and repertoire of Discovery, its politics and poetics, to understand contemporary conditions of violence in Colombia’s political landscape—especially those faced by black and indigenous communities. It defines speculative geography and briefly traces the dominant historiography of Colombia’s armed conflict, offering a counternarrative of the conflict as rooted in deeper histories of settler colonialism and speculative imagination of the country’s geography as a potential utopic space-time. The construction of Colombian national subjectivity hinged on Western notions of “the human” and a global property regime dehumanizing black and indigenous life and delegitimating their knowledges. The introduction delineates the book’s primary method of intimacies as a way to show colonial and decolonial networks and entanglements of political and economic, ontological and epistemic formations, challenging linear historical modes. A chapter outline summarizes the book.
