Among many other distinctions, she has received a MacArthur Fellowship and the Princess of Asturias Humanities Award. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a laureate of the George Polk Awards in Journalism.

This chapter explores the crisis caused by violence against journalists in Mexico. Underpaid and subject to the corruption long encouraged by Mexican government officials, journalists now find themselves constantly under threat by drug traffickers who want to control coverage. Dozens have been killed.
