This chapter, written by the book’s two editors, provides an introduction to Urvashi Vaid - feminist, activist, attorney, organizer, writer, philanthropist, and lifelong advocate for LGBTQ liberation. It highlights the themes that characterize her decades-long movement-building work for transformative social change and explains the book’s organization. The book is divided into four parts: Part I: Building a Movement; Part II: Expanding Its Scope; Part III: Taking Stock; and Part IV: The Possibility: —and Precarity—of Justice, with the writings included in each part organized roughly chronologically. The concluding section of the chapter describes the personal genesis of this book.
