Africans in the contemporary era interact with screen media cultures that are dynamic, fragmented, multiply connected, decentered, and more accessible than the screen media cultures of previous eras. These attributes have implications for how audiovisual stories by Africans are accessed using different media, and for the autonomy of African screen media cultures. This afterword makes the claim that aesthetic independence in screen media productions without control over the means of distribution offers a limited form of independence for African screen media practices. As a result, the fiercest battles for audience share and preservation of a degree of autonomy in the contemporary African screen media industry are being fought in the realm of distribution.
