The book’s preface outlines its origins in Andrew Pickering’s earlier work in the history of science, especially his analysis of agency and performance in The Mangle of Practice: Time, Agency, and Science and his account of the history of cybernetics in The Cybernetic Brain: Sketches of Another Future.
