Chapter 7, “Follow the Surplus,” returns to the question of colonialism by tracing the outflow of surplus value from South Africa to China. It details how Chinese sojourners rely on extralegal practices and African laboring bodies to remit profits to China. Far from a celebratory narrative of Chinese capitalism or south–south cooperation, the chapter demonstrates how profits are squeezed from the edge of formal economies and racialized surplus populations. Such economic practices of enclaving and extraction have overall underdeveloping effects that retrench uneven geographies of accumulation.
