The introduction presents the conceptual, theoretical, and historical relations between blackness and indigeneity against the limits of Marxist and left critique. It traces the black left’s pressure on Marxism in seeking to account for blacks’ bound, unwaged, and waged labour in the contexts of slavery, anticolonial struggle, and the independent postcolonial state. It elaborates where that pressure fails to challenge settler logics embedded within both capitalist accumulation and left critiques that seek to represent black life and labuor history in the face of anti-blackness, which exceeds normative categories of political representation. It places native and black studies in dialogue to elucidate their shared critique of racial capitalism. The chapter also outlines the settler logics at play in the postcolonial Caribbean. It theorizes and rejects the pre-positional structure of postcolonial independence and Indigenous sovereignty within which the latter is endlessly negotiated, reinvented, and deferred.
