Chapter 3 focuses on Jill Johnston as an “embedded writer,” always writing from within an event even as she thought of herself as a perpetual outsider. Writing in this chapter includes pieces that focus on an Allan Kaprow–directed Happening in which Johnston performed; on a Charlotte Moorman performance interrupted by an audience member (and Johnston); and on a 1970 comedic piece about Johnston’s interruption of a Betty Friedan speech at a feminist fundraiser.
