Sharia Politics, Obasanjo’s PDP Federal Government, and the 1999 Constitution
This chapter explores the serious implications of sharia for democratic governance and modern development during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. It provides a detailed analysis of the politics of sharia during the two-term presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, focusing attention on critical issues such as gender, ethnicity, regionalism, national (dis)integration, community development, and Christian-Muslim relations. The chapter also examines the decline of the expanded sharia policies of the twelve Northern Muslim states.
