The Politics of Religion in Northern Nigeria during Decolonization
-
Published:January 2017
Focusing on political and legal reforms in the Northern Nigerian Protectorate and the regionalization of state power in Nigeria’s three emergent regional administrative units, the Northern, Eastern, and Western Regions, this chapter explores the consolidation of Hausa-Fulani Muslim power during the period of decolonization immediately after the Second World War. With important implications for Nigeria’s contentious postcolonial politics, the chapter provides a detailed analysis of the British authorities’ failed reform policy on Islamic law during the period of decolonization.
