John Marrant’s gospel message is announced in his two autobiographical texts, A Narrative of the Lord’s Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant and A Journal of the Rev. John Marrant. Close reading of Marrant’s texts in the context of biblical narrative and Africana religious beliefs and practices offers new perspectives on a complex religious world of Black Christianity grounded in African sensibilities and brought into conversation with Christian theologies and scripture. Marrant’s accounts also help uncover the role of conjure in the formation of African American Christianity. In Conjuring Culture: Biblical Formations of Black America (1994), Theophus Smith argues for the centrality of conjure in Black spirituality—which this book affirms. The centrality of Africana sensibilities demonstrates the work of religious world-building Marrant was engaged in and offers new ways of understanding Black people’s religious encounters and the emergence of New World Africana ways of being.
