The subjects of Third World studies are power and the oppressed masses of the Third World—Africa, Asia (and Oceania), and Latin America (and the Caribbean). The spatial designation marks areas of the world colonized by Europeans for some four hundred years. The Third World anticolonial, antiracism movements of the twentieth century changed the course of world history. Third World studies is an aspect of that global revolution.
