Detritus in Durban, 2002–2008

The introduction, “Detritus in Durban, 2002–2008,” makes three moves. First, it poses the problem of racialized life in the industrial-residential valley of South Durban, which foists the burden of ill health on specifically racialized populations. Second, it shows how people responded in the early 2000s through what seemed like a confluence of labor, community, and environmental struggle. The waning of this conjuncture prompts the book's interrogation of the remains of various pasts as a limit to actual change. Third, it lays out the deeper theoretical argument that capital's search for a racial-spatial fix, also through biopolitical means, produces new geographies of struggle, including on the terrain of biopolitics; this prompts a particular form of Black, Marxist, and feminist critique. A summary of the chapters' arguments completes the introduction.
