To appreciate the richness of the Indian Ocean World, students and teachers must go beyond the kinds of written sources that are familiar to historians. This chapter introduces how the study of archaeology, architecture, art, music and dance, oral histories, and popular religious beliefs can complement primary texts to reveal a more human experience of the Indian Ocean World. These diverse sources and methods yield different perspectives and sources of information that enhance the historical record of texts alone.
