The introduction presents the origins of this book when Faye was a pregnant research subject for Rayna's study of how women responded to prenatal testing. Faye's daughter Samantha was born with a rare genetic disorder, familial dysautonomia. Later, Rayna's son Teo was diagnosed with dyslexia. This chapter then explores the relationship between genetic testing and the growing disability rights movement, the first step in the authors' journey learning about disability worlds, first through their children's life courses and then through their wide-ranging anthropological research.
