Introduction: Born in Flames

The introduction opens with the night of the arson attack and centers our core theory on the ground for analyzing this attack and connecting it to attacks on Black feminist worlds past, present, future: what we call “the racial capitalism playbook.” In the wake of the fire, research became a form of survival for us, and our relationships grounded everything we did. Through attention to the power of these relationships, that is, to relationships as method, we illuminate how these intimacies of our work not only bring our social world into different focus; they also teach us how to unravel the racial capitalism playbook using the theories and methods of our own counter-playbook. We conclude the introduction by distilling our counter-playbook as a four-part toolkit: accomplice, refusal, otherwise, speech. We invite readers to use this toolkit, as they do the book, to grow liberation in their corners of the world.
