Noise and the Body-Place: This ember state and the Critical Encounter

The third chapter delves into the work of attunement as critical corporeal method. The chapter analyzes This ember state (2018), a performance by sound artist Samita Sinha that reworks the myth of Sati, the self-immolating Hindu goddess, to highlight rage and its entanglements with combustion in relation to colonialism, racism, and heteropatriarchy. Employing an aesthetics of deconstruction, Sinha uses breath and sound to attune (and invite audience members to attune) to inner and outer landscapes of infinity. Working with and through Sinha's methods of body work, in turn, fuels attention to the sensational realm of critical reflexivity stimulated by the performance.
