This story of a young boy’s relationship with his uncle foregrounds effeminacy. It is a sentimental yet moving tale of the narrator’s transformation when a young boy from pride to shame in his uncle’s “inverted manner.” The story itself cleverly inverts the genre of Japanese soap operas while turning them inside out, as the narrator learns painfully from both other young boys and the school principal that his uncle’s effeminate ways are far outside social norms, especially in the realm of gendered divisions of labor.
