The introduction grounds the anthology in the five-year organizational history of Arts in a Changing America (ArtChangeUS), an initiative founded in 2015 with a mission to reframe the national arts conversation by embracing the cultural assets of demographic change. Emphasizing the pressing role of artists and cultural workers as innovative strategists for equity, this section also provides a framework of cultural movements in America, drawing on the legacies of the New Deal, the civil rights movement, Black Lives Matter, and the intersecting crises of 2020. With a call to artists to reimagine a “shared sustainable future that will be irresistible to all,” this section ends with a poem that invite the reader to “stay questioning the frame—including this one here.”
