This book invokes the notion of brutalism to describe an age gripped by the planetary-scale pathos of demolition and by the production of darkness and all sorts of waste, leftover traces of a gigantic demiurgy. The aim is not to write the sociology or political economy of brutalization, nor to examine the violence or forms of cruelty that tyranny has produced. Using the extraordinary wealth of available socio-ethnographic material, the objective is to paint a fresco so that questions about the age can be raised differently. This age, which has many names, is dominated by three central lines of questioning: calculation in its computational form; the economy in its neurobiological form; and the living, beset by a process of carbonization.
