This chapter contextualizes the Grateful Dead’s approach to improvisation by exploring the approaches of four other seminal improvising rock bands: the Jefferson Airplane, Cream, the Velvet Underground, and Pink Floyd. It also links these approaches to the professional or aesthetic goals of the bands and similarly shows how the Grateful Dead’s practice responds to their own concerns.
