Global capitalism’s animal agriculture has become a recipe for environmental destruction and for animal as well human suffering such as the 2020 pandemic. We must leap over the Marxism of “species-narcissism” and a brand of liberalism that invites us to save “wild animals” while 60 percent of the earth’s mammalian biomass used to farm cattle destined to become first-world food. To materialize a future postcapitalist society that is more free and equal than the capitalist present will require a salto utopico, a leap into a yet-to-be realized utopia.
