In chapter eleven, Shankar travels with Shiva as he goes to a school in Ramanagara district over the weekend to help students who have been deemed “in-need.” As he travels with Shiva, Shankar begins to recognize stratifications between the fieldworkers and those in the rural areas they live and work in. Such stratifications emerge in the flippant insult, in the inscription of educational value hierarchies, and in fieldworker aspirations.
