The prologue offers a pre/Islamic creation story in order to provide alternative cosmological visions in the context of global environmental disasters. Creation stories precede scientific thought and appeal to poetic imagination for tackling pressing environmental problems that are currently posed by the notion of the Anthropocene. The prologue provides a close reading of a creation story that appears in medieval Islamic manuscripts and oral narratives that imagine the world as stacked on the back of a bull, balanced on the back of a fish, and ultimately held in the wings of an angel.
