Chapter 3 analyses the televised ritual of the Eucharist on Canção Nova’s TV station. The chapter shows how contemplative devotion builds up and makes elastic a sacred body. Highlighting the doctrinal disputation on the ambiguous status of the Eucharist—whether it is a mere representation of the sacred, or whether it partakes in the sacred—the chapter asks what happens to that dispute when the Eucharistic body enters a regime of mass mediation dominated by the fantasies of immediacy and live transmission. The chapter explores in detail how the postulates of (technological) real time and (mystical) real presence meet on the TV screen.
