Epilogue: Between Fear and Hope
-
Published:November 2016
The epilogue considers the devastation of Dominican territory, the divided political scene, and a new era of interrelation between the politics of Haiti and the reestablished Dominican Republic in the context of the greater Caribbean. Idealists could not hold onto power, but they did not stop fighting. Meanwhile, rebellion began in both Cuba and Puerto Rico. Although authorities reestablished order in Puerto Rico, combatants in Cuba maintained a massive campaign for independence and the end of slavery. Political struggles and restrictions elsewhere in the Caribbean emphasized all the problems that faced Caribbean residents seeking freedom and citizenship: racism, colonial interference, political divisions, among them. On Dominican soil, elites used familiar, anti-Haitian narratives, trying to erase the solidarities that had only just blossomed. A familiar elite group regained power in the capital city administration. Still, fighting continued.

Some of the AGN-RD collections were being reorganized during this research period; Fondo Anexión’s legajo numbers changed from 2006 to 2008 to 2010, for example. The bulk of the numbers cited here refer to the most recent 2008 and 2010 numerations; wherever possible, changes are recorded in the corresponding citation.
