In Capital, Marx worked hard to establish the inequality of different types of worker, denying the value of slave labor in order to amplify the value of wage labor relative to that of capitalist management. By evacuating him or her of productivity, Marx himself turned the “negro slave” into a thing. At the heart of historical materialism, Marx fetishized not only the “negro slave” but also the overcoat, the factory, and the piano.
