Cai ends his study with two key questions: What are socialist crises? And how are these crises to be overcome? In exploring the first question, Cai identifies five areas of contradiction as key challenges to China after the revolution. Whether or not efforts to overcome these challenges failed, Cai argues that the notion of crisis is nevertheless a productive one. It leads to a better understanding of socialism and to a further exploration of ways to overcome socialist crises and crises in socialism. Cai’s discussion here is an open-ended one that invites additional renewed examination of the historical importance and lessons of revolutionary China.
