Foregrounding the problem of class struggle in the 1960s and its manifestations in literature, this chapter returns to the key question of what happens the day after the revolution and examines literary and other cultural expressions that aimed to address some of the issues confronting postrevolution China. Identifying consumption as a key area that contains a large set of issues, Cai explores the desire to deterritorialize on the part of certain urban youth and the efforts, especially the political logic, to prevent such tendencies. The resulting cultural conflicts and their narrativization in the cultural representations in the 1960s are thoroughly explored.
